Don’t let Yenta fool you, contrary to popular belief, Jewish matchmaking did not make its debut on the acclaimed movie, Fiddler on the Roof. In fact, match making goes as far back as the bible.
In genesis 24 it is written that Abraham sends his servant Eliezer to find a wife (Rebecca) for his son Isaac.
In the Talmud studies there is a reference that proclaims that forty days before a person is
formed, a heavenly voice announces their future spouse.
Later we go on to find that shidduchim played a central role in medieval times and continued its customs in orthodox and Haredi communities.
More recently it found its relevance in more modern and secular circles with the introduction of Jewish dating services and apps. This allowed the blending of both tradition and technology.
